What NOT To Pack When You're On The Move
June 2025
Are you about to make a big move? Well, packing up your whole life can seem like an insurmountable task, but
it becomes much easier when you know what you do not need to bring along to your next home.
To gain a better understanding of items that are better left behind or discarded when moving, we asked the
experts here at King Relocation & Logistics for their advice. We hope that his will prove helpful in streamlining
an upcoming relocation so you can make it your best move yet!
- Outdated Technology and Cords. We all have that one drawer full of tangled, unidentified cords and
outdated technology. While it might seem essential to keep these just in case, they are often unnecessary clutter. Consider recycling electronics and donating unused gadgets before the big move.
- Books You'll Never Read Again. Books are heavy and take up a lot of space. If you've already read
them or don't plan to read them, it might be best to donate or sell them before you move. Many
communities have donation bins at their local library or drive around the neighborhood and you might
spot a Little Free Library where you can place your books for the next reader to discover.
- Unused or Broken Furniture. Damaged furniture or items you haven't used in the past year can be
left behind. Moving is an excellent time to reassess your furniture needs and decide what's worth taking
to your new home.
- Clothing You Don’t Wear. Many of us keep clothes we haven’t worn in years "just in case." It’s
important to be realistic about what you will and won’t wear in the future. Consider donating these items
to a local charity like Goodwill.
- Outdated Documents. Holding on to old paperwork that's no longer relevant can take up a lot of
unnecessary space and create a security risk, especially if it contains personally identifiable
information, or PII. When disposing of these documents, be sure to shred any with sensitive data and
recycle the rest.
- Expired Food and Medication. It's easy to forget about expiration dates, but moving is a great time to
clean out your pantry and medicine cabinet. Discard any items that are expired or that you haven't used
in a while.
- Cheap Items That Are Easy to Replace. There's no point in lugging that $10 lamp across the country.
Consider selling, donating, or discarding inexpensive items that are bulky or heavy, and then replace them once you are settled in your new home.
- Items with Unpleasant Memories. Moving provides a perfect opportunity for a fresh start. Don’t pack
items that bring back bad memories. This move should be all about creating a positive and comforting
space, so leave the negative energy behind.
A relocation is an ideal time to declutter and start new. Remember, it’s not about the quantity of items you possess, but their value and utility in your life. By knowing what not to pack, you're not only making the physical move easier but also ensuring your new place is filled with items that serve a purpose or bring joy.
